GVANG is an unrivaled exotic sportscar powered by... a steam engine! It was built in Sydney, Australia in the early 1970s and its name was derived from the name of the designer Gene van Grecken. He designed and built this fantastic prototype with some help from Bob Britton and Stan Smith. The car is fitted with a two-cylinder steam engine developing 300kW!
The engine of 2.9-liter nominal capacity was mounted between the rear wheels and featured oscillating pistons and an electronically controlled generator. It automatically monitored and controlled the steam supply. No gearbox or clutch was needed thanks to the enormous amount of torque produced at low engine speeds.
The car was demonstrated Sydney Motor Show in 1972 and this is where this scarce original brochure comes from. A truly spectacular #cartefact it is!
The Gvang steam car had an estimated top speed of 320 km/h and van Grecken even intended to beat the land speed record for the steam-powered vehicle. However, his inventions were so much ahead of their time that some people were not entirely satisfied with them and the project, unfortunately, was quickly ended and forgotten.
