Hommell

France

Hommell, a French automobile manufacturer founded in 1990 by Michel Hommell, a former racing driver and owner of the Échappement magazine, quickly gained attention for its innovative sports cars. Based in Lohéac, Brittany, the company unveiled its prototype at the 1990 Paris Salon, sparking interest and leading to the production version's debut at the 1994 Geneva Motor Show. The initial model was a two-seater sports coupe featuring a mid-mounted 2.0-liter Peugeot engine and a six-speed gearbox, set within a tubular steel chassis and equipped with all-round independent suspension.

By 1998, Hommell expanded its lineup with the Barquette, an open-top version of the Berlinette. Concurrently, the Berlinette RS, the upgraded version of the original model, received a more powerful Citroën engine. Under the leadership of Gilles Dupré, Hommell produced several notable models:

In 1994, the Berlinette Échappement was introduced, featuring a 1998 cc in-line 4-cylinder engine delivering 155 bhp and a top speed of 138 mph. The Barquette, also released in 1994, offered similar power but with a top speed of 130 mph.

In 1999, the Berlinette RS coupé emerged with improved performance, boasting 167 bhp and a top speed of 143 mph. This was followed by the Berlinette RS2 in 2001, which pushed the limits further with 195 bhp while maintaining the same top speed.

Despite its success, financial difficulties led to the halt of production in December 2003. In 2005, Chinese investors expressed interest in acquiring the Berlinetta Hommell plans to produce them near Shanghai, but the deal fell through.

Hommell's brief but impactful journey remains a testament to French automotive innovation and a reminder of the vibrant history of niche sports car manufacturers.
